Career tips for young professionals in construction, maritime, and greentech industries
Having been at SALINE for almost a year and a half, I’ve experienced firsthand what it’s like to be a young woman working across industries like construction, maritime, and greentech. Let’s be honest, it can feel overwhelming at times. These sectors are fast-paced, hands-on, and still largely male-dominated. But there’s huge opportunity to make your mark. Here are some tips I’ve picked up along the way:
1. Be curious and ask questions
No one expects you to know everything from day one. Ask questions, take notes, and learn from those around you. Curiosity shows engagement and a willingness to grow.
2. Build your confidence
It can be intimidating when you’re the only young person—or the only woman—in the room. Remember that your perspective matters. Speak up, share ideas, and back yourself. Confidence grows with practice. And yes, it may be a cliché, but I’m a firm believer in fake it till you make it! If you say it with confidence and don’t doubt yourself, no one will question it.
3. Network intentionally
Relationships are key in these industries. Get to know your colleagues, attend industry events, and reach out to people whose work you admire. Networking isn’t just about career moves—it’s about learning and finding mentors who can guide you. The more you go to, the easier it gets!
4. Seek out mentors and role models
Mentors provide guidance, advice, and a sounding board when challenges arise. Look for people who inspire you, inside or outside your company, and don’t hesitate to ask for their support. SALINE is a great place for this; we’re a female-majority company, and our SLT has a wealth of experience and knowledge to share.
5. Embrace learning on the job
Hands-on experience is invaluable. Be proactive, shadow different teams, and take on new tasks. The more exposure you get, the faster you’ll grow—and the broader your skillset will become.
6. Be resilient and adaptable
Mistakes will happen—and that’s okay. Learn from them, adjust, and keep moving forward. Industries like construction and maritime value problem-solvers who can adapt quickly to challenges.
7. Celebrate your wins
Recognise your achievements, no matter how small. Completing a milestone, presenting an idea, or mastering a new skill all counts—and it builds confidence along the way.
Starting out in these industries can be challenging, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. Be curious, back yourself, build connections, and embrace every learning opportunity. Your early years set the foundation for a career that’s exciting, impactful, and uniquely yours.
